The Organization:  Merit America

Merit America is a non-profit that has been named by the New York Times as “a glimpse of the hybrid future of training programs for the disadvantaged.” Our fast and flexible programs are designed to work for underemployed and unemployed adults - who can learn while they balance work, family, and in current times, social distancing. We combine on-demand online learning with coaching and peer support (delivered in-person or virtually) to create the most effective, scalable model in the field.  Our goal is to build the most effective, large-scale education-to-employment program in the country, and​ we have the ambitious goal of reaching ​10,000 learners annually and driving $1B in aggregate wage gains by 2024.

In the past several months, more than 40 million Americans have filed for unemployment benefits. Today’s challenge is about more than getting Americans back to work: it is about creating pathways to higher-paying, more resilient careers in order to build a more equitable future as the economy recovers. Now, more than ever, we must rally behind the tens of millions of American adults who are unemployed or stuck in low-wage jobs in pursuit of family-sustaining, recession-resilient careers. 

At Merit America, we believe that a cross-functional, diverse, smart and highly driven  leadership team is what will drive Merit America into the next phase of our growth.  This team of five (soon to be 6) executive members (Rebecca, Connor, Leila, Crystal, and Jen) have demands that require the group to prioritize and make efficient use of their collective resources in order to achieve our ambitious mission, live our values collectively and continue to deliver results for our learners.  

To that end, Merit America is looking for a Strategy Manager.

The Opportunity

The primary mission of the Strategy Manager is to help maximize the effectiveness and impact of both our Executive Team and the organization overall, with a focus on managing performance against Merit America’s goals and overseeing select strategic projects.

The Strategy Manager will report directly to the VP Of People and Planing, Crystal Barcelo 


Job Responsibilities

The responsibilities of the Strategy Manager will include, but are not limited to, the following:

 Planning & Performance Management 

  • Facilitate cross-functional planning & performance management processes to build shared understanding of our progress towards our goals
  •  Identify opportunities for improvement
  • Update our near- and long-term strategic plans as relevant, including setting organization-wide Objectives & Key Results
  • Facilitate Executive Team meetings and key cross-functional discussions,
  • Operationalize the Executive Team meeting roadmap and hold that group accountable to living our operating norms
  • Create systems, structures, routines/ceremonies related to goal setting aligned to our strategic plan

Internal communications

  • Lead preparation for key Merit “ceremonies” by preparing and disseminating materials, including for biweekly All Hands meetings, monthly Board updates, and quarterly Board meetings (in collaboration with the Co-CEOs)
  • Support internal communication cascades to ensure that key decisions and high-priority topics are shared in a timely and clear manner to all levels of the organization

Strategic Projects

  • Support projects that directly relate to the efforts of departments within Merit America, where there is a need to add extra “firepower” given resource or time constraints 
  • Incubate projects that do not have an obvious “home” within Merit’s current team structure and need to be incubated and strategically developed/refined before larger-scale roll-out across the organization

People management:

  • Manage one or more cross-functional assistants to ensure Merit America executives receive sufficient administrative support

  • Bias towards action, ownership, codification and accountability in taking on new projects and initiatives no matter the size

Compensation, Benefits and Start Date

This position is full time

Salary:  $125,000

Location:  Remote
